To commemorate the 105th anniversary of the African National Congress, the party began a Twitter hashtag that started trending for all the wrong reasons.
A call by the African National Congress (ANC) to their supporters to share pictures or short video clips of how they are promoting “Unity in Action” in their areas took an unexpected turn when Twitter followers instead attacked the party.
The ruling party started the hashtag #WeAreANC to connect with their supporters ahead of their 105th anniversary celebration on 8 January which will be celebrated at the Orlando Stadium, Soweto.
Despite a dismal and embarrassing social media campaign, ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa believes the hashtag #WeAreANC which trended on Twitter has been a huge success for the ruling party.
“When we began this hashtag we wanted to start a robust conversation about the birthday of the ANC. It (#WeAreANC) exceeded our expectations. Whether positive or negative the ANC achieved its goal of highlighting its values and beliefs,” Kodwa said.
