Yamekela has dreamed of having two hands his entire life. When his mom received a special opportunity to make a wish that would come true, she used it for her son, changing his life:
Motherwell, South Africa (01 August 2024) — 10-year-old Yamkela Qolo has dreamed of having two hands for as long as he’s been alive.
His mother, Zoliswa, remembers being shocked and scared when the doctors told her the news—her son only had one functioning hand.
“Society can be cruel, especially children, who ask why he has one hand,” she shares, adding that at the time she learned her son had been born with a hand deformity, she did not know how her baby would cope.
But Yamkela did (or ten long years at that) before his and his family’s greatest wish would eventually come to be.
Zoliswa, who works as a waitress, learned of a special wish campaign that, every year, grants a chosen employee from the company a chance to make a wish in their lives come to reality. Determined to use her chance for her son and his requests for an artificial limb, she submitted her request with high hopes.
In incredible news, Yamkela’s story was heard by Sun International and his mother’s wish was chosen. Thanks to this, as of last Friday, he was fitted with a prosthetic arm worth R150,000.
For the Grade 4 St Augustine’s Primary School learner, the prosthetic changed his life in a matter of moments. He wasted no time in sharing the things he’ll now be able to do with the new addition to his arm, with sights set on soccer and maths.
“I am a goalie so my prosthetic hand will help me to grab the ball,” he beamed, adding that having ten fingers will also help him do maths much faster as he’ll be able to count more easily.
