The Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching gave 13 Grade 11 students hoping to be doctors one day, a real-life look into working at a hospital.

Knysna, South Africa (13 August 2023) – Job or work shadowing is a very helpful way to learn if the dream job you have in your mind, is one you could do when leaving school. 13 hopeful future doctors recently spent three days learning about what the job entails, by joining real-life doctors on the job.

The Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching (KILT) took 13 of its Tertiary Launch Programme participants on an incredible work adventure to get an immersive look onto following their dream careers.

“KILT orchestrated an exhilarating opportunity for 13 aspiring medical students, from Knysna Secondary School”Loeries” , Percy Mdala High School , and Concordia High School.

These Grade 11’s are part of KILT’s Tertiary Launch Programme, a 3-year programme that guides young adults from Grade 11 through to their first year of university. Support during these transformative educational years is crucial.

Over three days, they were immersed in the world of medicine through a captivating job shadowing experience at Knysna Provincial Hospital. They explored the Emergency Centre, the Operating Theatre, and the X-ray Department.

Throughout these eye-opening experiences, they absorbed valuable lessons, igniting the opportunity to chart their path towards university.”

Aqhama Godana, one of the Grade 11 participants got to engage with patients and learned a lot!

“The doctors gave me an opportunity to ask the patients questions about their health and to say which diseases they might have according to their symptoms… I’ve learnt a lot…”- Aqhama Godana, Grade 11

This programme is geared to help young minds find their path and follow their dreams. It is one of many kinds of projects and programmes run by KILT.

KILT was established in 2016 to help build an empowered community through education and became an NPC in 2022. It was started by Ms Gill Marcus after she retired as Governor of the Reserve Bank. Knysna-based school principals approached her and asked for help with problems they faced in their schools. Together they were able to address many of the problems these schools faced. Today, KILT runs 18 projects in 17 government schools in the Knysna District.

Since starting KILT, many children have been given the chance to shine! From heading overseas to compete in spelling bees, to reaching for the stars and the unknown in Cape Town; the young minds they support, have had opportunities to take on their most exciting challenges, often not seen in small towns. KILT makes sure every child they work with, has a chance at greatness!
