The first catch-up surgeries at Groote Schuur Hospital are well underway and thousands more will take place over the year; the Trust is so close to fully funding 1500 procedures.

Cape Town, South Africa (17 June 2022) Earlier this year, the Heroes of Groote Schuur Trust set up a massive campaign to help catch up on all the missed surgeries during the pandemic. This massive undertaking saw them trying to raise R15 million to do 1500 surgeries.

The GSH Surgical Recovery Project may seem ambitious but it is doable and will really alleviate the backlog.

Gift of the Givers announced that because of the vision and commitment shown by the hospital’s management team, it would help kickstart the project with a R5-million donation to the cause. Since then, many donors have contributed towards this incredible medical goal.

Operations started in May, with eye operations taking the first priority. The E4 theatres have now begun to operate again so all the remaining catch-up surgeries for the year, can be scheduled for the various departments.

Thanks to various donors, including 200 individuals, the Trust only needs to raise a remaining R2.7 million. This will help complete the 1500 surgiers that were put on hold during the pandemic.

The first surgery went to 89-year-old Amina Ismail who needed to have her cataracts removed. She was overjoyed to finally get her sight back.

“I waited for many years to get my eyes fixed. And just when I thought I was going to have my cataract procedure, Covid happened. So I had to wait again. But I got a call a few weeks ago saying I could come in and have it done on the weekend. The procedure was so quick and the medical staff were very kind. I can new see much better and I can watch TV”. – Amina Ismail

There are many more people waiting for their own procedures and all going well, 1500 additional people be helped! You can help the Trust make this happen by donating using the methods below.
