The Cluny Animal Trust in Clarens spent 2022 focused on saving and treating as many pets as possible, they went above and beyond by helping give 10,000 treatments.

Fouriesburg, South Africa (04 January 2023) – The Cluny Animal Trust in Clarens, Free State made a difference 10,000 times in 2022. The small organisation, serving small towns in part of the Free State, worked tirelessly last year, even stamping out a potential rabies outbreak.

The Trust was placed on our radar in mid-2019 when they started making 100 dog kennels to get through the freezing cold winters. They gave the kennels to families from local informal settlements, thus ensuring each pet had somewhere safe to sleep during the cold weather.

When the pandemic rolled around, the organisation again rallied supporters, this time making up pet food parcels. They handed out hundreds of bags of pet food, so that pet owners wouldn’t have to worry about the animals going hungry.

In 2022, they had their share of losses but in the end, it all worked out; one of their long-standing volunteers moved away, leaving a missing piece and their principal veterinarian moved overseas. Thankfully by June 2022, they had formed a new relationship with Dr Elsa who helped them towards achieving 10,000 veterinary treatments, sterilisations and life-changing surgeries.

It is always a celebration when people unite to save animals. When they found two separate cases of rabies, they jumped into proactive mode to make sure the animal populations in their care were safe.

Over the entire year, they vaccinated 4402 animals against rabies, the team performed 608 sterilisations, dewormed, tick and flea-treated 4554 animals and performed 853 surgeries for animals that needed it. They served thousands in the Kgubetswana and Mashaeng communities, making all the difference!

The team feel a great sense of accomplishment for how 2022 went and is very excited to continue this into 2023.
