40 days barefoot

Sicelo Mbonani is going shoeless for 40 days to raise awareness for children that suffer long walks to school without shoes, he is collecting shoes as he goes.

Sicelo Mbonani was selected as the Lead SA Hero of August 2016. Since then he has launched a project to collect shoes for children that have none. To raise awareness he is going to be barefoot for 40 days.

At the date of publishing this story, Sicelo has been barefoot for 22 days.

“I learnt and realised that these kids without shoes might have certain illness and chronic diseases later in life… I learnt they might be absent from school because of the. The truth is, it’s not safe for these kids to be without shoes. Let’s help them – You can make their education journey possible by donating a pair of shoes.”

The team has struggled through the first few days, having to brave the elements barefoot in the cold weather and rain, not to mention hot days when the ground can burn feet badly.

Sicelo has been sharing daily tweets and describing what he feels each day that goes by without shoes.

Sicelo has inspired many others to kick off their shoes for the cause. If you would like to donate shoes or funds to buy shoes you can contact Sicelo on Twitter.
