Gqeberha, South Africa (24 November 2022) – Five South Africans were saved after their boat capsized. The incident took place in Gqeberha but thanks to the swift response of NSRI, everyone got to safety… including the boat.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is a voluntary non-profit organization in South Africa tasked with saving lives through drowning prevention. It operates 41 bases comprising coastal stations and inland stations on dams, and there are over a thousand volunteers on standby at all hours.
The NSRI Gqeberha crew were activated following reports of a boat capsized at Noordhoek. The NSRI crew responded and launched a rescue craft with a crew to assist.
It was confirmed that five casualties were in the water after a “Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat” capsized three nautical miles West of Noordhoek, and half a nautical mile off-shore.
On arrival on the scene, an adult male skipper was found to have safely swum to shore. Four adult males were found clinging to the upturned hull of their capsized casualty craft. All five crew were accounted for.

Once the casualty craft was righted, they were taken onboard, a towline was established from an NSRI rescue craft and the “Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat” was towed to shore.
