Around 80 people have lost everything in a fire at the Kleinmond informal settlement; Pringle Bay Knitwits donated 51 blankets to help the families in need.
Pringle Bay, South Africa (02 March 2022) – Every year, the KnitWits of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day get an exciting assignment from founder Carolyn Steyn. The project is set for Nelson Mandela Day, which is then used to give back to charity.
The 2022 assignment is a “Rainbow Nation Blanket of Hope”. This year, 67 Blankets will be collaborating with Gift of the Givers to honour frontline workers and people in need. The blankets will be bright and vibrant, perfect for adding hope during the winter months.
Many KnitWits, an affectionate name for those who knit or crochet blankets for 67 Blankets’ causes, have already started knitting their rainbow blankets. The Pringle Bay Knitwits were able to bring lovely bright colours to a scene of grey/ black desolation and heartbreaking loss recently.
The informal settlement in Kleinmond, Western Cape, was raised to the ground by a fire. The fire left 80 people destitute. The Pringle Bay Knitwits were on the scene and handed over their entire collection of rainbow blankets to help the community. That was 51 blankets in total.
“This happened early yesterday morning, and by 5 pm, we gave them our full stash of ‘ rainbow blankets, 51 in total. All handmade with love.” – Gaenor Becker
While the Pringle Bay Knitwits’ 51 blankets may not end up breaking the record for 2022, they have already done exactly what the were meant to; to comfort and warm people in need.
