Johannesburg, South Africa (04 March 2023) – An 82-year-old Joburg resident is spending his spare time fixing potholes and has already managed to fill over 50 of them!
Rainer Dixel started fixing potholes in his area to help his neighbours. His daughter, Candy Dixel, calls him the “King of Potholes”.
Potholes have become a severe problem in South Africa, causing extensive car damage. My Broadband recently reported that the country’s roads now have an estimated 25 million potholes — around seven million more than the estimated households in the country. This shocking information comes directly from the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral).
“My dad is committed to improving the state of the nation one pothole at a time. He believes the potholes are a danger. They have caused many accidents, so he is doing it for safety as well,” Candy Dixel explained to Good Things Guy.
Originally from Austria, Rainer has lived in South Africa since he was 27 years old and is passionate about being an “active citizen” in our beautiful country.

He pays for all the material himself and does all the work himself. Recently a friend – who is currently visiting South Africa – assisted him financially to keep doing his selfless good work.
To date, Rainer has fixed over 50 potholes in his area and surrounds.
Candy says her dad’s message to South Africa is that instead of constantly complaining, “we should rather get up and do something about it”.
A reminder that even though the government cannot keep up with fixing our road infrastructure, kind citizens are taking to the streets to do it themselves, once again proving that the people of South Africa make this country so incredible.
