A group of runners just ran from Johannesburg to Cape Town… and raised much-needed money for charity in the process. This is Mad2Run!

Western Cape, South Africa (23 October 2022) – MAD2Run exists to create a unique and adventurous platform for fundraising. It is an opportunity to be part of an inspiring cross-country journey to raise funds for the Make A Difference Leadership Foundation (MAD).

This adventure for a cause was initiated in 2012 when a group of friends decided it was time to be proactive and contribute positively to their much-loved country. This team of ordinary South Africans set themselves an extraordinary challenge – to use their feet for a remarkable feat – and run 1,500km across South Africa, for South Africa.

“I had listened to a talk by Braam Malherbe, who ran across the Great Wall of China in aid of the charity Miles for Smiles and decided that there was no better time than now to get proactive and make a positive difference in South Africa”, says Shaun Raaff, the project creator.

MAD2Run is an epic 8-day long, 24hr relay-style run from Johannesburg to Cape Town, with 36 MADsters, who embrace the adventure every year.

The relay aspect of the event is sectioned into 85km shifts, which take around 9 hours each. There are 18 shifts in total over the week. Each shift is made up of a group of 6 runners, completing 20km during each shift at an average pace of 6 minutes and 30 seconds. After each shift (every 85km), a shuttle vehicle will meet the runners on the road for a changeover. A changeover is where the next group of runners will begin their 85km shift right where the previous shift finished. The retiring runners are then shuttled back to base camp for a rub-down, shower, food and rest before leaving for their next shift, which could be in 8, 16 or 24 hours’ time. Rinse and repeat for one whole week!

To date, the annual event has raised R6,7 million for the MAD Leadership Foundation – a holistic and comprehensive education programme that financially and emotionally supports each scholar in achieving academic and leadership excellence.
