“Mat” is a senior dog that was found tied to the fence at CLAW one morning earlier this month; he was very underweight and his fur was matted – now he is retiring, surrounded with love.
Johannesburg, South Africa (07 February 2023) – The Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) team arrived at the premises on the 4th of February this year, to find a senior dog tied up to the gate. He was completely matted and once all the fur was removed, it became clear that he was severely underweight.
The team named him Matthew, Mat for short, and they are giving him the start of a retirement he rightfully deserves.
What devastated them most once Mat was freed of his painfully bound and matted fur, was that he is a medium-breed dog and weighed under 20kg. They immediately started him on a diet of delicious soft food to help get his weight up.
Since finding him tied to the fence, they have treated the wounds hidden below his fur, removed an ingrown toenail and given him pain medication. He is still moving quite slowly but the team believe this will go away once he realises it won’t hurt to move anymore – his matted fur must have been very painful.
As with any senior dog, he is very placid and just wants to chill out. His eye sight is great, he just needs a good dental treatment and lots more food and love. Before long, the team will be able to find him his forever home to spend his golden years.
“You may ask why we are making such an effort with this old boy?
Its simply because he deserves some love and comfort after years of discomfort”
People have been moved to send him an extra helping of food. If you would like to help Mat, maybe contribute towards his dental, you can reach out to CLAW here to find out how to donate.
