For 30 years, Afrika Tikkun has made it a mission to support South Africa’s most vulnerable children and youth out of poverty’s grip.

South Africa (02 August 2024) – Children are the foundation of any society and require care and support in raising them to be SA’s next leaders. Sadly, many have been born into unfortunate circumstances beyond their control. Thankfully, however, there are real-life guardian angels like those from Afrika Tikkun whose sole mission is to nurture and guide vulnerable young people.

Celebrating its 30-year anniversary, Afrika Tikkun has been a beacon of hope, dedicated to lifting South Africa’s most vulnerable children and youth out of poverty.

The NPO’s holistic “Cradle-to-Career” approach provides a comprehensive pathway to success, nurturing young minds from preschool to employment.

Through education, nutrition, healthcare, and skills development, they empower individuals to break free from the chains of adversity and become catalysts for positive change in their communities.

“Our programmes culminate in the development of talented and disciplined youths, instilled with good values from an early age. These individuals are brimming with potential and ready to meet the in-demand skills needed from SA’s labour pool,” shares Dr Onyi Nwaneri, Group CEO of Afrika Tikkun.

Enriching young lives for 30 years

In its 30-year history, Afrika Tikkun has made a profound impact, reaching over 325,000 young lives. Their work has seen them providing 25 million nutritious meals, distributing 77,000 food parcels, offering social support to 105,000 families, and conducting more than 15,000 primary healthcare interventions.

While their good work deserves applause, Afrika Tikkun notes that much more still needs to be done to improve the lives of young people, especially concerning the high unemployment rate.

The organisation is committed to working alongside the government’s Youth Employment Service (YES) programme, which aims to create substantial work opportunities for unemployed youth through its Head Start Programme.

Inspiring young people to chase their dreams

In recognition of its 30th anniversary, the organisation launched a “What Afrika Tikkun Means to Me” campaign, a tribute to countless real-life stories of hope, resilience and success.

One beneficiary, Abraham Langa, joined the Afrika Tikkun programme 25 years ago when he was merely five years old. Langa shared his experience of how Afrika Tikkun helped him escape the jaws of poverty and propelled him to achieve his dream job as a UIF Labour Specialist.

“It is because of Afrika Tikkun that I dared to dream, and I am now well on my path to a successful life and a prosperous future.”
