After eight rounds of IVF, four miscarriages, and 75 days in hospital, Robyn Ireton brought her son Thomas home – a story of fierce determination, unbreakable love, and the triumph of life against all odds.
South Africa (14 November 2024) – It’s a story of courage, resilience, and boundless love: Robyn Ireton, a single mother who faced unimaginable challenges, has finally brought her baby home after a journey that tested her spirit.
Against all odds, baby Thomas is thriving today, a powerful reminder of the miracles that come from unwavering determination.
Robyn, now 40, made a bold decision three years ago to take control of her future and embark on the path to single motherhood through sperm donation and in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Little did she know how winding and difficult the road ahead would be. Eight rounds of IVF and four heartbreaking miscarriages later, Robyn’s persistence was put to the ultimate test when she fell pregnant with twins.
Her pregnancy was filled with both hope and worry, and at just 18 weeks, her world was shaken. Robyn’s waters broke prematurely, leading to a devastating situation for her baby girl, Libby, while her twin brother, Thomas, faced uncertain odds.
“We fought so hard for both of them,” Robyn reflects.
“Losing Libby was devastating, but I feel she somehow gave Thomas the chance to live. Her strength was his lifeline.”
Guided by the expertise of Dr Nelis Pretorius and his team at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, Robyn navigated each difficult day with resolve. The focus turned to protecting Thomas, even as the odds seemed stacked against them. Robyn spent 75 days in hospital, enduring the emotional and physical toll of a complicated pregnancy while holding onto hope for her baby boy.
When Thomas was born prematurely at just 29 weeks, he was whisked to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where a multidisciplinary team worked tirelessly to ensure his survival. Robyn’s recovery was equally intense—she experienced significant complications after delivery but received life-saving surgery and blood transfusions. Through it all, her tenacity shone.
“The team at the hospital became like family to me,” Robyn says.
“Their care and commitment got us through every challenge. They truly were extraordinary.”
Thomas spent two months in the NICU, growing stronger each day under the dedicated care of Dr Ricky Dippenaar and his team. Finally, Robyn’s dream came true: she brought her healthy, happy baby home. Now, several months on, Thomas continues to thrive, a testament to both his mother’s courage and the expertise of the medical team who supported them.
“This journey has been so much harder than I ever could have imagined,” Robyn admits.
“But when I look at Thomas, I know it was worth every moment. He’s here, and he’s perfect.”
Robyn’s experience is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the support that modern medicine can provide. Premature birth is more common than many realise, but with the right care, many of these tiny fighters can defy the odds. For Robyn, her journey also shines a light on the importance of making informed choices, seeking expert guidance, and holding onto hope even in the darkest moments.
Today, Robyn embraces motherhood with gratitude and joy. She hopes her story will inspire others facing similar challenges to persevere.
“To anyone going through a tough time, know that the struggle is temporary. Keep going. The love you feel when you finally hold your baby makes it all worthwhile,” she shares.
Robyn and Thomas’ story is a celebration of life, resilience, and the extraordinary bond between a mother and her child—a story that reminds us all of the good things in the world.
