The community of Barkley East in the Eastern Cape braved the aftermath of a snowstorm to help a farmer get his cows back down the mountain.
Eastern Cape, South Africa (11 June 2024) – Earlier in June 2024, a snowstorm in the Barkley East area saw a farmer’s heifer herd caught up the side of a snowed-in and icy mountain. He rang the alarm and the community arrived to help get the cows back down the mountain to safety.
Allan Isted, a talented photographer who captured the rescue, shared that the herd belongs to his cousin. He went up to help his cousin with the cows and managed to share some beautiful photos of the snow.
“50 odd heifers found themselves trapped below a kranz with ice sheets below and above. Anyway, my cousin sounded the alarm and the community pulled in and dug a path through the snow and got them out.
I have never been so cold in my life, we were at the edge of slippery cliff faces. I am overwhelmed that we actually got them out” – Allan Isted
The community proved that when you need help, just ask and it will be given. The sheer determination to save the herd, along with that community spirit that is slowly brewing and building throughout South Africa, drove the Barkley East community up that ice-cold mountain and got everyone back down safely afterwards.
The stunning images captured by Allan could be set in the snowy mountains of Europe, and yet they were taken right here in sunny South Africa. It just goes to show how intense the winter is set to be this year.
