It was all hands on deck as the Amanzimtoti community came to the aid of seniors when a mudslide disaster struck an Elder’s Voice home. From security companies and local schools to businesses and everyday citizens, everyone pitched in to help evacuate the residents and provide them with food, bedding, and shelter.
Amanzimtoti, South Africa (21 February 2025) – The Amanzimtoti community sprang into action after hearing the cries of The Elder’s Voice KZN founder, Joanne Herbst when a mudslide disaster struck at the Riverside old-age home facility this week.
A devastating mudslide hit the home following heavy rains in Durban this week, flooding the property in the early hours of Thursday morning. The disaster displaced 20 residents and damaged medical supplies and beds in its path.
Joanne was able to safely move all the elderly residents from the facility with the help of security patrol companies, local schools, businesses and community members who didn’t think twice about dropping everything to help seniors in need.
“I don’t even know who to start thanking for helping us evacuate all the people and take them down to our other facilities,” commented Joanne in a video.
And when she needed further assistance with a cooked meal for the 20 seniors and bed linen, the community yet again came through! They donated whatever they could to help Joanne and the elders get through the unexpected ordeal.
“Everyone is safe, everyone has a meal and everyone has a roof over their heads. That’s all that counts. The rest is material. I just want to thank each and every person who showed up for us.
“Thank you for the bedding, thank you for the sheets, the meals that were dropped off. Thank you for just being there and coming through. Toti community you have restored my faith,” thanked a grateful Joanne.
While the organisation has managed to survive this storm, a lot still needs to be done to get the Riverside home up and running again.
The Elder’s Voice is an elderly community upliftment initiative based in Durban with shared elderly living home-based care residences which cater to vulnerable senior citizens.
