Rebecca Quam has spent the past 9 years volunteering her skills to animal welfare projects in the North West; she adopted two cats and is now planning to take them home to America.

North West, South Africa (02 February 2024) – Dr Rebecca Quam has been volunteering as a vet and teacher at the North West University in exchange for accommodation, all while providing student ministry on campus. During her time volunteering in South Africa, she has dedicated many of her hours to working with animal welfare. In that time, she adopted two cats from local organisations.

Knowing she was heading back to America, Dr Rebecca started working on saving to get her two cats, Leo and Laddie, home to America. Leaving them behind is not an option – these are the loves of her life. In the process of getting Leo and Laddie ready to go, it has become clear that her savings are short. To make up the difference, a crowdfund has been started to help Dr Rebecca get Leo and Laddie to America.

Joanne Wilson from the Cat Angel Refuge reached out to share Dr Rebecca’s story. She shared that Leo was adopted from the organisation in 2015.

“Dr Rebecca Quam gave up 9 years of her life to be in Mafikeng, to be a vet and teacher at the NWU (purely as a volunteer only her accommodation was provided) and to be a. She has gone above and beyond in everything. She is not only an amazing vet and teacher but also a very dear friend to our family.

She adopted Leo from us in 2015 and then took on Laddie when he had severe medical issues and he became her 2nd cat.

Dr Quam is one of the most loving, selfless, kind, compassionate person I have ever had the joy and luck of knowing. She brings peace to all who meet her.” – Joanne Wilson

Dr Rebecca Quam shared that she has been loving her volunteering time in South Africa. It has been a hope and dream of hers since she was a child, and it is what inspired her to study to be a veterinary specialist.

“For the past 9 years, I have volunteered at North-West University, Mafikeng campus. In addition to student ministry, I have worked in the NWU animal hospital and trained final-year animal health technician students.

While in South Africa I have adopted two cats. Leo was adopted from Angel’s Refuge in 2015 and Laddie was a campus kitten who I adopted after he was brought to the our clinic with severe upper respiratory issues and ringworm. They will both be moving back to America with me, but the costs are significant. Especially on a volunteer’s income.

If you can help me bring them home to America, it would be greatly appreciated!”

You can help Dr Rebecca get her babies back home by supporting her crowdfund here. Her family have been working towards helping her too but they need a little extra help from fellow animal welfare supporters, just to cover the outstanding amount.

In a world where people often leave their animals behind, Dr Rebecca is working hard to keep her animals close. We love that!
