Tiny Dancer with a big heart - the story behind the talent!

Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do.

Port Elizabeth, South Africa – Anda Arries showcased his incredible talent during the Elsen Academy’s Talent Show earlier this year, and boy, did he blow everyone away with awe-inspiring moves!

A self-taught contemporary dancer, Arries is a bright & vibrant grade 8 learner at Elsen. Watch his incredible performance below:

We chatted to him to find out a little more about his dancing and his inspiration.

What type of dance do you like?

I enjoy contemporary dancing I started dancing in grade 5

Why did you like this type of dance?

I can express my emotions through dancing. It shows another side of me, the fearless side, free to be myself.

Where did you learn to dance and how old were you when you started to dance?

Taught myself to dance at a young age, my parents were always worried I’d hurt myself, pushing the boundaries, but I’ve always been mature about my limits.

What does dance add to your life?

Humour, confidence, the ability to express my emotions, something I could not do before, I have a sense of compassion towards myself and my friends and family – I know how much work and dedication is required to perfect my art and reach my dreams.

Have you performed on stage/competition?

Elsen Academy talent show was my official debut!

What lessons from dance training have proven most valuable?

Hard work, look after my health and body, to be comfortable with my talent as a dancer, keep my mind, body and soul in tip-top form and train hard to reach the goals I set out for myself.

Who/what inspires you most in your dance career?

Miles Eric because he also was a self taught dancer.

Where do you see yourself after school with dancing?

Not too sure yet, I love my dancing; however, I also dream of being a pilot – perhaps I get the opportunity to do both!

What advice would you give to a peer that wants to learn how to dance?

Don’t give up. Keep believing. Hard at first. Persevering. Something good can come out of it. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do.
