Little Auryn, a courageous child born with a profound hearing impairment, will soon get to hear the sound of her parents’ voices. Thanks to the help of generous organisations, Auryn will soon undergo a life-changing cochlear implant surgery.
Johannesburg, South Africa (08 November 2024) – Born with various health challenges, little Auryn has been dealt a rocky start in life. The hardest hurdle yet has been not being able to hear the voices of her mom and dad for the two crucial years she has been in this world.
Auryn, named after her father Nico’s grandmother, with a Gaelic name meaning “gold”, was diagnosed with profound deafness earlier this year. At just two years old, she is able to hear deep bass sounds but cannot perceive voices.
Due to financial challenges that led her parents to forego medical aid, obtaining the costly cochlear implant, priced at R550,000, became an insurmountable obstacle.
“It was devastating to learn that our daughter couldn’t hear us. How did we miss this? It’s heartbreaking,” said Nico.
However, the power of human kindness has shone through. Thanks to the generosity and support of kind-hearted individuals, what once seemed like an immovable mountain has now been lifted with grace. This little girl will soon be able to hear and communicate with those who love her most!
With the support of Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund and Operation Healing Hands, Auryn will secure the life-changing cochlear implant procedure she needs and her parents now have hope that she will soon experience the sound of their voices for the first time.
Brenché Loubser from Operation Healing Hands stepped in to assist. Southern ENT will supply the cochlear device at a reduced cost of R150,000, a discount of R100,000.
Additionally, hospital costs were lowered, with medical staff donating their time and expertise.
With R100,000 still needed to cover the procedure scheduled for 12 November at Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital, Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund will provide the remaining amount to ensure Auryn can hear for the very first time.
“Helping Auryn is one of those moments that reminds us why we do what we do,” Jacaranda FM’s breakfast host Martin Bester shares.
“Knowing she’ll hear her parents’ voices and laughter, the sounds of life we sometimes take for granted, is beyond special. It’s a privilege to be part of this journey for her and her family.”
