Baby Clothes

A bag of baby clothes, nappies, a blanket and other baby essentials saved a new mother who had no clothes at all for her newborn.

Johannesburg, South Africa (31 August 2022) – Imagine being a new mom with almost nothing, sitting at a state hospital with a newborn and someone places a beautiful bag filled with baby clothes, blankets and essentials on your bed. You may have some baby items, or you may have none, but after the generosity of others, you breathe a sigh of relief, knowing when you take your tiny baby home, they will be dressed warm and wrapped in a soft, cosy blanket.

That is why the Grace Factory does what it does, to give struggling new moms hope!

The Grace Factory, an NPO that gives practical assistance to moms and babies in need during the first few weeks of motherhood and infancy, stresses the importance of doing so. The organisation packs the items into gift sets and delivers them to new moms in government hospitals all over South Africa. The packs consist of basic necessities such as clothes, blankets, toiletries, nappies and a few things for mom.

In a recent handout, a mom was so touched by the gift, she revealed that her baby had no clothing at all and the gift would make a world of difference. She cried as she opened the bag, seeing just how generous the Grace Factory had been.

The volunteer that gave her the gift shared the touching moment below and it brought us to tears!

“As I walked into the second cubicle, in the second ward we visited, I noticed a mom and her baby in the far corner. I walked over to this mom and it wasn’t difficult to see from her tired eyes that life, and specifically this birth, had been difficult.

After introducing myself and asking her baby’s name, I continued with my usual line of: “This is a gift from The Grace Factory to bless you and congratulate you on your new baby”. I then told her what was in the bag; nappies, a blanket, wet wipes, newborn clothes… At these words this precious new mom burst into floods of tears. Between sobs she unwrapped her clean but well worn baby blanket to reveal her precious gift; tiny, vulnerable and with only a nappy on to cover her nakedness. “I have no clothes!” she gasped. “I prayed for clothes this morning. I prayed!!”

On this day, I can only say that two lives were touched and one possibly more than another. Her life, yes, as she gracefully received the gift of the maternity pack we handed to her. But even more so, my life was touched through the realisation that more often than not, the answers to people’s prayers and desperation come in the form of caring human hands and feet.”

The Grace Factory works all year long to help moms in need at state hospitals. Take a look at the prep they did below for 1000 moms on Mandela Day.
