From domestic worker to lawyer: Mom puts herself through Varsity!

A domestic worker casually told her employer that she had put herself through law school while cleaning… and had earned a few distinctions along the way!!!

Stellenbosch, Western Cape – Zimbabwean domestic worker Barbra Gurupira shocked her employers when she told them that she has just completed her LLB degree. The 30-year-old domestic worker informed them that she had pushed her way through law school by using her salary to fund her studies.

Actor Tim Theron and his wife shared an emotional post on Facebook after finding out the news!

“This awesome lady is Barbra Gurupira. We found her through Sweepsouth when we were looking for someone to help us with the chaos in our house over the holidays. We were chatting about her family when she shared that she put herself through university by working as a domestic worker and completed her LLB in October of this year – she even had a few distinctions!”

Theron put a call out to help Gurupira find a firm that would allow her to finish her articles. He asked if there were any attorneys that might be willing to grant her an interview for a chance to complete her articles.

“Here’s your chance to give someone an opportunity that might make an incredible difference in a family’s life!

She’s clearly a disciplined hard worker. After all, you don’t work AND study this hard if you’re not. Her English proficiency is impressive and it was clear that she has a good head on her shoulders. We got the impression that she is working with a goal in mind.”

South Africans immediately responded tagging lawyers they knew, while others requested Gurupira’s CV.

“Thank you so much for the amazing response so far! Over the weekend we worked with Barbra to get her CV ready, and today she’s getting all necessary documentation in order and certified. Through the course of today and tomorrow we’ll make sure that Barbra gets in touch with everyone that provided us with their contact details. Thank you!”

A week later, Theron updated his followers with the great news that Gurupira had been offered a position to do her articles in Vredendal and would start working on the 1 March 2019!!!!

It’s stories like these that highlight how incredible the people in South Africa are and also how powerful social media is when used correctly… one conversation turned into a Facebook post, has literally changed someones life!
