On Saturday, 19 November, Fuel2Grow (a local child-focused fundraising initiative) will take over the amphitheater at the V&A Waterfront to host a star-studded Battle of the Wits.
The quiz show will see small teams of school children pitted against adults (including some exciting celebrities) in a nail-biting battle to see who, in fact, is smarter.
“Ikamva Labantu, the NGO that is running Fuel2Grow, are aiming to raise funds for Fuel2Grow campaign which assists vulnerable children living in Cape Town’s townships. Fuel2Grow provides a holistic support structure that gives them what they need in order to thrive (in other words fuel to grow).”
Says V&A Waterfront CEO, David Green: “A key focus for the V&A Waterfront has always been on providing leisure and entertainment activities for the entire family, so the Fuel2Grow Battle of Wits is a perfect fit for us. We are also proud to be a sponsor of the event because of the great work that Fuel2Grow does, and the difference this makes in the lives of less fortunate children.”
Battle of the Wits will be hosted by Katlego Maboe from Strictly Come Dancing and Expresso on SABC 3. Katlego will be joined on stage by celebrity participants Michael Mol (Hello Doctor and Top Billing), Africa Melane (Cape Talk), Zolani (Freshlyground) and Danilo Acquisto (Good Hope FM and Afternoon Express).
The celebs will each be placed in an adult team and these four teams will go up against kids from schools around Cape Town as well as some of the kids from the Fuel2Grow programme, in an extreme general knowledge battle.
There will be exciting prizes for the winning teams as well as the audience participants and throughout the day.
Katlego and the Fuel2Grow team will also be encouraging the audience and passers-by to donate to the Fuel2Grow campaign to help reach the R1,5 million goal that needs to be reached by the end of the year. The fun-filled day will finish off with a performance by Fuel2Grow supporters, Freshlyground.
The current focus for Fuel2Grow is to assist the Rainbow Centre afterschool programme based in Gugulethu.
This includes meals; school uniforms and stationery; additional support at home, at their schools and in their communities; and aftercare that includes meals, sports, art activities and equipment; primary health screenings and academic support.
Says Nyasha Manjengenja, Fuel2Grow’s Programme Manager, “The landscape of a child’s academic future is determined by the opportunities, support and resources availed to them during their school-going years. Bearing this in mind, we have designed our programme to ensure that we are actively involved in providing holistic support to the children in our care. Fuel2Grow gives them access to resources, support services, and the motivation they need to fulfill their biggest dreams.”
“We are looking forward to hosting Cape Town at the V&A on 19 November and can’t wait to see who truly is smarter. My money is on the kids!” adds Manjengenja.
