A Capetonian dog has found her way back to her owners after being missing for 2.5 years!

It is not unheard of for a lost animal to be reunited after many months, sometimes even years, as in the case of Bella; a female Jack Russell who went missing for over 2 years.

On the 11th of September 2018 Sarah Lange, from Claremont, was called by the SPCA Lost and Found department and informed that her dog had been handed over as a stray to the PDSA when a concerned person found her in Athlone. As an unowned dog she was brought to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for safe-keeping.

Sarah was shocked to say the least as Bella had been missing for 2.5 years!

“Seeing Sara and her daughter Naeve (who was just 4 months old at the time of Bella’s disappearance) reunited with Bella was a really wonderful sight, and truly brings home the power of a micro-chipping a pet.

Because Sarah and her family made the wise decision to micro-chip Bella, their reunion was a truly happy and miraculous event. The micro-chip meant that once Bella was handed over to animal welfare officials her owner was informed of the news within hours, putting an end to years of untold worry and sadness.

We can’t know exactly what Bella’s life looked like over the last few years but we do know for certain that without a micro-chip this truly special reunion would never have happened.”

The SPCA encourages anyone who finds a dog to take it to the nearest vet or welfare to be scanned so that owners can be quickly traced. It seems likely that Bella was taken in by someone and cared for over the last 2.5 years and while this was no doubt an act of kindness it did prevent Bella from finding her way to her frantic owners.

With so many animals finding themselves abandoned, stolen or missing it is vital that pet owners choose to micro-chip their pets.

It’s important to note that a micro-chip is not a tracking device but rather an identification tool that ensures all of an owner’s information is uploaded onto a central database. If a dog or cat is found and brought into any vet clinic or animal welfare the chip will be scanned, owners’ contacted and as a result proof of ownership is irrefutable.

Micro-chipping provides pet owner’s with peace of mind, knowing that should their dog or cat ever go missing, the animal can be traced back to them if found.
