A taxi driving on the wrong side of the road during peak-hour traffic, has just been “schooled” by a concerned citizen on a motorbike.
There seems to be a new wave of social activists in South Africa who are banding together to stop petty crime in it’s tracks.
It has become a habit for taxi drivers in South Africa to drive into oncoming traffic – if lanes are moving slowly during peak hour drive times – but it is illegal!
Sean Nysschen, a road user in Johannesburg, saw a Taxi driving on the wrong side of the road in Bryanston and decided to stop him from putting the lives of the passengers and other road users in danger.
The biker, frustrated with some people breaking the law and getting away with it, stopped him and was eventually joined by other concerned South Africans who eventually forced the taxi to completely reverse and join the rest of the traffic.
One woman in a silver VW would not allow him to pass and pointed out to the taxi driver that he was not allowed to drive on the wrong side of the road.
“You can’t come this way! It’s not fair to everyone else on South Africa’s roads… you are driving on the wrong side of the road and putting other people’s lives in danger!”
Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar has been quoted before saying that “driving on the wrong side of the road is a contravention of the National Road Traffic Act” but for some reason taxi’s still take a chance when roads are at the busiest.
The video which has been shared thousands of times has struck a chord with South Africans who are frustrated with crime and lawlessness in our country.
Dorothy Matthee commented: “Well done to you Sir for standing up for what is right!! Such a pity that so many people drove by without assisting you.”
Karen Evans added: “Hero, you are my HERO!! Well bloody done and if only more people would take such a stand! Made my day, week and month!!!”
M. du Plessis posted: “Excellent job! You probably saved a few lives today. You’re a hero!”
Just 24 hours after the video went viral, the Chief of Police released a statement saying that the Taxi driver who was captured on camera by Nysschen, had been arrested by JMPD Safety officers and had been charged with Reckless & Negligent driving while being detained at Sandton SAPS.
Watch the video below, we have cued it to start at 6:17 as the situation carries on for over 8 minutes. Feel free to watch the entire clip but be warned, there is NSFW language:
Well done. Bet is this an Old taxi? No Yellow tape on the side? Looks like old taxi’s are coming back. N12 and Golden Highway very bad.
Well done, These Taxi’s are taking over the roads as they please and Metro is doing nothing about it, i was forced off the road by a taxi driving in the right hand land and then suddenly he cut straight in-front of me to make a left turn stopping all other traffic as well… Law enforcement should really start stepping up their game when it comes to Taxi’s and their ignorant & reckless driving.
