153 bikers and friends came together to support fellow rider Andy Biram who was recently hit by a car while out on the road; they raised funds to help cover some of his medical bills.
Midrand, South Africa (07 June 2023) – Andy Biram has in incredible job! He takes South Africans and international tourists, on motorbike tours around South Africa, showcasing the absolute beauty of our country. Unfortunately, while on a tour in late May, Andy was hit by a car. The bikers community rallied to support him, throwing together a fundraising event to help cover some of his medical bills.
The bikers community in South Africa is notorious for doing good! You see it when children need support in facing their abusers at court, outside hospitals praying when one of their own is hurt, providing protective gear for delivery riders, riding across South Africa collecting teddies for children in need, or just helping charities that work with children; bikers are super generous of heart. That is why, when Andy was hit, his community stepped up.
According to Andy’s wife Penny, he underwent extensive surgery on his injured legs. Now that he is in recovery, his surgeon has advised that he needs at least 12 months of healing and rehabilitation before he can get on his motorbike again. This news was a huge blow as running his business, The Adventure Academy, means he needs to be able to ride and give tours.
Joe Flemming of Bonafide Motorcycle Tours heard the news and started planning a fundraising event to help with some of Andy’s medical expenses while he is out of action. They managed to get 153 people to the event, loads of donors for raffle tickets and even a group of Harley Davidson riders that made a pit-stop to drop off a donation.
“The overwhelming response from the community has just been so heart-warming – our family has been completely blown away.” – Penny Biram
Penny shared that they were able to raise R10,000 on the day but that people were still reaching out to offer help too. The funds will be going towards wheelchair rental, physio and trauma counselling costs to start. They will also need to change parts of their home so that Andy can move around with ease over the next year.
The community came to his aid when he needed it most, showing just how close knit bikers are. We loved hearing that Penny, Andy and their children were so well supported. While Andy has a long road of recovery ahead of him, he won’t be making the journey alone!
