Randburg, Johannesburg – Natasha Kollmann was on her way to work when she saw a little bird laying on the roadside. She stopped and saw it was a baby Kiewiet. The bird was unresponsive so she picked it up to take it to the vet.

If you have ever come across a Kiewiet family, you will know that they are extremely protective of their chicks. So much so, they dive bomb your head if you get too close. Naturally, the parents of the little chick were very upset that Natasha was taking their baby away.

Natasha drove the little bird to her nearest vet but sadly they couldn’t assist. She called a friend at the Bromhof Veterinary Clinic in Randburg who confirmed they could assist. Natasha was very late for work and couldn’t make the trip so she called an Uber for the bird.

The driver gladly assisted with the rescue and drove the bird to the vet on Natasha’s behalf.

“The Uber driver acted like it was the most normal thing in the world. The baby bird was immediately named Uber.” – Greda Kollmann, Natasha’s mother.

Little Uber was covered in scratches and bite marks, most likely from a cat. The wounds had become infected and so the chick needed to rest and recover. Five days after the initial rescue, Natasha was called and informed that little Uber was all healed up. She went to collect the chick and drove back to the spot where she found it.

“She took him back to where she’d found him and the parents actually came back for their baby! So many happy tears!
They showed him to their nest and so this story has a wonderful happy, feel-good ending.”

“Monique and the other vets from Bromhof, you’re simply fantastic!”

Thanks to Natasha, this little bird has a fighting chance come winter.
