blind

What started as a simple request for baby clothes turned into a life-changing meeting, now, this blind mother can watch her children grow up.

Melissah Mfema posted a request for some baby clothes on the “I Love Fourways” Facebook Group back in 2017. Simonne Solarsh saw the post and set up a meeting with Melissah to drop off the baby clothes.

When Simonne arrived she didn’t expect that Melissah would be blind. She was completely moved by the dedicated and loving mom’s spirit and zest for life. This meeting sparked a thought in Simonne’s mind and she set out to see how she could help improve Melissah’s life and give her the chance to see her baby for the first time.

Simonne set out to find a solution and thanks to a local doctor, a glimmer of hope started to sparkle and grow. Simonne set up an appointment with Dr Stoler and the two women, Melissah’s husband Justin and their two daughters all met at the Mcdonalds in Rivonia.

Since the initial meeting, Melissah has had the procedure which has improved her sight. The talented photographer from the Facebook page, ‘I Have A Name’ met up with Melissah and Justin to get an update regarding her sight since the procedure.

“I am so thankful!!! The doctor says that my eyes will keep improving until end December and then my sight will be the best it will get – I still have 2 months of improvement and every day I am seeing changes! Even if this were the best it was going to get it has made such a difference to my quality of life. Before I had to stay inside our room with the girls and couldn’t let them out to play because I couldn’t supervise them because I couldn’t see them. Now I can see enough that they can play out and I can move around freely and even cross the road by myself .

Justin now doesn’t have to worry about me and the girls all the time and is free to find work. I had a lot of pain at first and my eyes were very sensitive but things are much better and the pain is gone. I just want to thank everyone for their help in making this happen!!”

This has been an incredible story of community support. Both Melissah and Simone are true inspirations. We are so glad to report such a happy ending for both women.
