Blood donor Alexandra got to meet someone who has been saved by a blood donation on a recent trip to her donor centre, and the moment had us in tears!

Cape Town, South Africa (01 December 2021) – Alexandra first learned about blood donations when her then 3-month-old son needed a life-saving operation. During the operation, he received several units. She was determined to give back and started donating despite her fear of needles.

On her recent trip to the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) branch on Long Street in Cape Town, there was a board up showing all the people her donations would have helped. Alexandra was moved to tears at the sight of all the photos of people who had survived thanks to donors.

As she walked towards the door, she was met by one of the recipients who wanted to share how grateful he was for her donation.

It is incredibly emotional watching the meeting. Take a look below.

The WCBS will continue to share these inspiring stories because “we have so much to give”!

Bloodstock levels in the Western Cape tend to decline during the festive season. One reason could be that regular blood donors go on holiday and perhaps do not attend their blood donation clinic. COVID-19 continues to add additional pressure to our blood supply.

“We would like to appeal to all eligible blood donors to give the biggest gift by donating blood and saving up to 3 lives”, says Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. They need to maintain a 5-day stock level in order to supply the Western Cape with a sufficient blood supply.

Today we’re launching our “We have so much to give” campaign. This campaign will be launched on all our social media channels. It showcases videos of blood donors inspiring others to donate blood and recipients thanking donors for the remarkable act of blood donation.

“You can do so much more than live. You can save lives”, Gevers added.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate. Blood donation takes 30 minutes of your time, and you can donate every 56 days. To find your closest blood donation clinic, please download the WCBS app on Android and iOS, send us a WhatsApp on 060 549 7244 or visit www.wcbs.org.za for more information.

We have so much to give. Do something remarkable, donate blood.
