Fire and Rescue teams took three hours to rescue a dog trapped on a cliff on the mountainous area behind Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch.

Bruno the Boston Terrier was missing for nearly three days before walkers found him pinned between a cliff and branches in the Coetzenburg mountain range in Stellenbosch.Bruno’s owner Lia Rothman said she does not know how her four-legged boy escaped from their Paarl house on Friday.

“We were handing out pamphlets and putting up posters all over the area,” Rothman said.

Then while Justin and Elanza Alberts were walking their dog, Mitch, on Sunday, they heard Bruno barking.

“We heard the barking but we did not know where it was coming from. Our dog Mitch ran towards the cliff and that’s where we saw movement,” Justin said.

The couple alerted officials immediately.

Justin said: “I tried to climb down the mountain but I couldn’t reach, I then alerted the rescue service.”

Rothman was called immediately to the rescue site where she was reunited with Bruno and then took to social media to thank everyone that was involved in bringing her dog back to safety as well as thanking the rescue services that went to great lengths to rescue her pup.

“Bruno has been found!!! Brunie is home safe! THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH to Justin Alberts and Elanza Alberts for your help today!”

“If it wasn’t for them we may not have found Bruno at all!

“He was stuck on the side of a cliff and they heard him barking for help, they found him and notified local services to assist in the rescue mission! We would also like to extend a HUGE thank you to Stellenbosch University’s Campus Security, they had helped us so much in the search for him!”

Thank you to Gideon Lekeur, Charlton Swartz, Ashley Andrews, Jean Mynhardt and Paul Elias. Another even bigger thank you goes to the Stellenbosch Fire & Rescue Services – to Faheem Hendricks and Tershwill Bartman, thank you so much for your brave efforts to rescue him and bring him safely up the cliff!”

“Another huge thanks also to those assisting them on site – Shameel Vermeulen, Thembalethu Tabata, Gloria Mpino and Maria Ntshkaza. Thank you to Dr Kidd from the Stellenbosch Animal Hospital for coming in on a Sunday to check that he was okay and in good health.

“THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who shared our posts, helped look for Bruno and sent us messages of support – we truly appreciate and cannot thank everyone enough!”

“THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!”
