The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, joined by Dr Natheem Jacobs’ family, planted a tree in honour of the young veterinarian who was passionate about protecting animals.
Cape Town, South Africa (09 March 2023) – The Cape of Good Hope SPCA took time this week to honour the life of Dr Natheem Jacobs, a veterinarian at the animal welfare organisation, who was murdered outside his home after interrupting thieves robbing his vehicle. The SPCA was joined by Dr Jacobs’ family and together, they planted a tree in memory of his life.
The tragic incident took place in the early hours of the 2nd of March 2023. Dr Jacobs was only 24 years old when his life was taken from him. The loss faced by his family and the greater community was felt deeply and left many angry. Honouring his life and his work, was how the SPCA team could make sure he is so much more than one of South Africa’s crime statistics.
“A tribute ceremony was held at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA this morning to honour the life of Dr Natheem Jacobs. It was a heartfelt and emotional event, and we were honoured to have his family in attendance.
During the service, a tree, which will serve as a living tribute to his legacy, was planted in Dr Jacobs’ honour. It represents the strength and resilience of his character and, in time to come, will serve as shelter for wild birds, just as he provided a safe space for animals in need. As it grows, may it represent the growth of what Dr Jacobs would have wanted most of all, a kind and more compassionate world for all animals. We want to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to the Jacobs family for allowing us to honour their beloved son’s life. We know this is a difficult time for them, and we appreciate their willingness to share it with us. We would also like to thank the public for their outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
Your kind words and actions have been a source of comfort and strength for the Jacobs, Levy and SPCA families alike, and we are grateful for your continued support.
Dr Jacobs’ legacy will live on through the tree planted in his honour and the memories we shared today. Let us all keep his family in our thoughts during their time of mourning.”
The tree, which can be seen below, will be a comforting sight and a reminder of all that Dr Jacobs stood for during his time at the SPCA. Should you find yourself there, spare a moment to wish him well and give a thought to those he left behind.
Rest in Peace Dr Natheem Jacobs.
