Craig forgot his keys in the car, saw the car was gone sometime later, went to report it stolen only to see it at the station waiting to be claimed.
Cape Town, South Africa – Craig Barrowman owns a car that requires him to lock and unlock each door manually. He says he often accidentally forgets the key in the door after unlocking and locking more than one door at a time. The last time he did it, he thought his car had been stolen.
Since sharing his story, Craig has decided to reward the men who rescued his car. This is their story…
Craig went out to catch up with friends and parked his car outside a local tavern. After a few hours, he reached into his pocket only to find his keys were not there. Panicked, he went outside to check on the car, and it was gone!
Craig and his friends quickly set off to the police station to report his car stolen and got the surprise of a lifetime. Craig’s car was at the police station. Lehlohonolo Sesedinyane and Peaceful Ndlangamandla had seen the keys hanging in the door and thought the car would get stolen. They climbed in and drove it to the local police station to prevent it from being stolen.
“Went to the nearest police station to report it, to find that these kind people had seen the key hanging in the door, driven my car to the police station and handed in the key, to save it from being stolen. It took me and my friends a few minutes to process, on hearing this!”
Craig got the chance to meet the gents after they rescued his car.
“Finally, I got to meet them and thank them. Thank you, Lehlohonolo Sesedinyane, for restoring our faith in humanity. Ubuntu in action. Still can’t believe it. Lessons in mindfulness and gratitude!”
After Craig shared the story, he started thinking of ways to say thank you to the guys, for their kindness. He decided to start a crowdfund to raise some money for them.
“I hope in doing so to help them build a better life as they are both struggling financially and only just surviving. They are two great guys with great potential, and I would love them to be able to realise that potential better, with some financial assistance and hopefully some mentoring too.
Many people in social media have said, “I hope they can be rewarded”. This way, the reward can be much bigger than if it was entirely up to me. It took me a while to process what had happened and figure out what I could do about it – rather overwhelming!
I have met and chatted with them. They have ambitions of opening a small retail business and need some finance to start, and some mentorship. Their living conditions are quite bad and it would be great if we could help improve that for them.
I hope this will be a kickstart to lift them out of poverty, and also give their self esteem a boost.”
If you would like to help Craig say thank you, you can contribute to his crowdfund here.
