The Cat Angel Refuge takes in cats and dogs from across the North West, cares for isolated communities and services towns that do not have access to any animal welfare support.

Zeerust, South Africa (04 October 2022) – In early September, the Cat Angels Refuge sent out a desperate plea for help to raise funds to purchase the property they currently use to service the majority of the North West.

The Cat Angels Refuge SA, based in the North West province, is hoping to raise the funding needed to keep its doors open and the team operational. If they close, that is a whole section of the North West that will go without an animal welfare organisation as they are currently the only one along their routes.

The organisation is currently renting the old premises where the SPCA used to operate. The SPCA closed its doors in 2012, and Angels stepped in to fill the gap that was left. The landlord had offered for the organisation to stay free but with the agreement that they would purchase the premises outright in 2022. With so much need during the pandemic, they never managed to put aside the full amount to purchase the property. Hope is not lost though, they are working hard to make sure they reach the target.

They had managed to raise over R175,000, which was placed in a Bidvest call account to be used towards the purchase of the property.

They then launched a BackaBuddy fund in the hopes of raising the balance for the property. The funds raised using either the bank account or BackaBuddy will be used specifically for the property.

The total needed for the property is R750,000, which will also go towards a few upgrades on the property so that it is at its best for all the animals. So far, they have raised R320 434.11.

Many other animal welfare champions have been hosting events in their honour. These funds have been added to the overall fund at Bidvest.

“We have started a Hero Campaign where we have worked out if 2261 people donate R190 we have the funds to buy.

Weimaraner Rescue in the Western Cape held 2 fundraisers for us and managed to raise an amazing R17 825 in June and R12 000 towards us buying the property.

The very very harsh reality is in September 82 animals came through our doors, from owner surrenders, strays, rescues, outreach sterilisations and emergency medical care due to the mass poisonings, we travelled over 2500km in the month alone.

We can not close down.” – Joanne Wilson
