Chandni Kistasamy could tell you a thing or two about persevering at the thing you initially dreaded the most, and going on to shine! She told us all about how her unexpected love for dance has led to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at Disney’s Magic Kingdom!
Johannesburg, South Africa (24 April 2025) – Despite her early memories of not being too keen about the idea of enrolling into Indian Classical dancing lessons, Chandni Kistasamy has blossomed into quite the performer.
She had just turned five when her mother signed her up for classes and in her own her words, was “determined to quit” before, strangely enough, falling in love with the two-hour Saturday lessons.
“It’s intense but really fulfilling,” she recounts.
Without ever intending to, Chandni discovered she was remarkably talented, so much so that she was selected to take part in Disney’s Magic Kingdom Theme Park’s Diwali Parade!
Previously, we shared the announcement about Chandni’s accomplishment and now Good Things Guy got to chat to her and learn all about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to not only showcase her dancing skills internationally but also honour her Indian heritage in front of many.
“I am grateful for this opportunity that came about through the efforts of my amazing teacher, Subashni Naicker of Natya Anjali School of Dance. It was she who sent in an entry for consideration.
“She sent in a motivation and provided material for review. The organising team replied positively, and this set the ball in motion. There is a team of about 10 of us going in October, and I am really proud to be representing South Africa and my dance school,” shares an excited Chandni.
The Crawford International Lonehill Grade 8 learner has been dancing for 10 years, and the opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time.
“From the reluctant child to someone who has learnt so much about this art form, I feel like I’ve reached a milestone. All those Saturdays, waking up early and travelling to class, sometimes in the rain and in winter too, just seems worth it.
And what is this talented teen looking forward to the most?
“I’m looking forward to being a part of this cultural experience. I’m looking forward to meeting other dancers from different parts of the world, and to experiencing Diwali celebrations on a big scale. I really just want to take in the festivities and enjoy this experience.”
Chandni, not only have you inspired us to keep an open mind to trying new things but we’re all set to cheer you on as you bring your dazzling moves to Disney!
