After losing his wife, daughter and dog, a 78-year-old man moved into his car because he had nowhere else to go, but this South African charity have finally found him a home.

Johannesburg, South Africa – One Small Act of Kindness is a charity that works on helping as many people as possible. The charity finds people in need and pools its resources to make sure they can help.

This time their cause has been to help an elderly man that was down on his luck and a little heartbroken. To protect his pride, his identity has been kept anonymous.

They first met him in July 2019, when the city was at its coldest, living in his car. He was parked in a police station parking lot as a safety precaution. When the team from One Small Act of Kindness arrived, two police officers were having a cup of tea with him and sharing their lunches.

After hearing his story, the charity started making arrangements to get him into safety. They learned that he wasn’t claiming any pension from the state and assisted him in getting that setup. They even managed to get him into a retirement home.

“In July we met an eldely gentleman who was living in his car. This 78-year-old was living in the car outside a police station for safety. Two of the officers were giving him a cup of tea and sharing their lunch with him but he was really down and out. He has lost everything in the world: his wife, daughter and then his doggy companion.

We assisted him to get this SASSA grant but it’s taking a lot longer than we had hoped and we need to help with with rent for the next 2-3 months + some groceries and supplies. We’re hoping to raise R10 000 to give him a bit of love and dignity. No elderly person should have to battle the way he has been. Please consider donating. All funds will be managed by One Small Act of Kindness.”

Now that he is settled in, the charity is helping to support him until they can get his state pension sorted. If you would like to contribute to their fund for the man, you can do so via BackaBuddy here.
