Hopeful chef, Tlou Molokomme, will be representing South Africa at the WorldSkills Competition being held in France; before she goes, she is putting her skills to the test with a challenge to use reclaimed foods to make a 3-course menu.
Johannesburg, South Africa (25 July 2024) – Aspiring chef, Thou Molokomme, is ready to test her skills before heading to France for the WorldSkills Competition. She will be using her skills to showcase cooking and as part of her practice, has teamed up with NOSH Food Rescue NPC to create and cook a 3-course menu using reclaimed foods.
NOSH is an organisation that helps prevent food waste by collecting food, on the cusp of expiring, from supermarkets to donate to charities in need. The organisation was started to be the middleman between retail food waste and the people of South Africa in need of food. Currently, the organisation works in the Johannesburg area but hopes to grow and spread across the country, saving food and people in one swoop.
One of the initiatives the charity has done over the last few years has been to host odd plate dinners. These are run once a month and the funds raised are used to further support charities.
They bring in bright young chefs who work with the rescued food to put on a three-course meal (sometimes more) to show the public that rescued food is just as good as bought food.
The food rescued from landfill is all safe to eat and a great eye-opener to how much can be done even if food reaches its expiry date. We love that there are organisations out there working to rescue food and make sure people don’t go hungry!
Tlou is currently studying at the Culinary Passions School of Hospitality who have joined NOSH to make this evening possible.
“Aspiring chef Tlou and the team will be presented with a random selection of produce and foodstuffs that would otherwise have gone to waste, but have been rescued by NOSH instead. You will see that that even unloved produce, (especially but not exclusively) in the hands of skilled and passionate culinary professionals, can shine and delight both the eye and the taste buds. The competitors are faced with several such Mystery Basket challenges during the competition as well and it is always amazing to see their creations!”
The Odd Plate Dinner will help raise funds for NOSH and give aspiring chef Tlou the chance to get training with odd ingredients.
Since its founding NOSH has diverted 2989 tonnes of food from landfills, redirecting it towards causes in need. That is a massive amount of food to feed people in need.
