The Ann Harding Cheshire Home is hosting a fundraising campaign with GivenGain as a way for people to give back on Mandela Day.
South Africa (18 June 2024) – The Ann Harding Cheshire Home is challenging individuals and companies to support them for Mandela Day. The premise is that for those who cannot donate 67 minutes to charity, donate R67 (or more).
Cheshire Homes was founded by Royal Air Force pilot Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire in 1946 when he welcomed a man with nowhere to go into his own home. Leonard nursed and cared for the man, and a year later, he was looking after 24 individuals with varying degrees of complex needs, illnesses and impairments.
The need for homes that catered to adults with special needs was great, and before long, several homes were opened in the UK. The first international home was set up in Mumbai, India, in the 1960s. Not long after that, the concept spread globally.
Today the Cheshire Homes are a haven for adults with disabilities, especially those who have lost the families that once cared for them.
In South Africa, the homes are not only a place of residence; they offer many services, including day centres, transport, employment and skills development, to name a few. Many of the centres also have charity shops that help fund the homes’ efforts.
Ann Harding Cheshire Home has joined forces with Givengain to encourage people to start crowdfunding for Mandela Day. Last year, a total of R800,000 was raised for charities in the name of Mandela Day.
The Ann Harding Cheshire Home is open to collaborating with companies, offering to visit offices where they can share what the home is all about.
“We are also very happy to come and spend an hour or two at your office, to tell your employees about the Ann Harding Cheshire Home, and to invite you to visit us at the Home, and see first hand the work that we are doing”
