Koringberg’s “Chess Master” Peter Farao joined forces with NPO Ek n Jy to run a chess club for youth in the area; over 30 children have signed up to learn and play.

Koringberg, South Africa (24 April 2023) – Ek n Jy, the non-profit organisation based in Koringberg, recently started a chess club for kids in the community. With the help of private donations from the local community and the expertise of the local chess master, Peter Farao, there are now 30 boys and girls playing chess three times a week at the POP centre in Koringberg.

Meet Peter Farao, who has taken up the task of bringing the joy of chess to children in his area and changing lives. Peter explains that the chess bug bit him when he was in primary school. He played often and was motivated to keep going, for one, because of a disability, which prevented him from playing rugby but also because he did well and started earning medals and certificates of merit for his efforts.

Peter is like many of the youth within his community, he was born and raised in Koringberg. He has never left but his love of chess has flourished and earned him the community title of “Chess Master”.

“We have amazing young talents here and there are some kids who are really playing their chess seriously!”

“One of the highlights of my life is doing charity work for our local non-profit, Ek n Jy. Ek n Jy allows me the opportunity to be involved in the development of young people. Ek n Jy have created a platform for sports development such as touch rugby, netball and street cricket and their program now includes chess which I am ecstatic about!”

Peter dreams of becoming a sound engineer one day, but for now, he hopes to empower the youth by playing chess. One of the perks of being known as the Chess Master, is that he is able to also provide private lessons to those wanting to learn beyond Ek n Jy.

“My motto in life is ‘do everything you undertake with willpower’ because I believe without willpower your plans will dismally fail.”

This is a motto that lives on in changing the lives of children from his community. Ek n Jy have embraced this new form of engagement with the Koringberg youth. They are excited to host a chess club final on the 6th of May 2023 @ 9 am at the POP Centre.

“Everyone is welcome to come and support our community kids on this special day.

For anyone who would like to learn to play chess or reactivate their chess passion, feel free to call Ek n Jy’s management for more information. Donations for the development of chess and other sporting programmes are also always very welcome!” – Ek n Jy
