A children’s home in Durban hadn’t had the opportunity to watch any of the Rugby World Cup matches. But, thanks to an overwhelming response to their call to make the final Boks night magic, the children got an evening that’ll go down in their history books:

Durban, South Africa (01 November 2023) — While many South Africans enjoyed the night that went down in the history books, the Rugby World Cup final, last weekend without a second thought beyond how much braai meat to bring, others with fewer resources had to do a lot more work to make the Boks night happen.

For St. Martin’s Diocesan Home for Children in Durban, the call to make their Boks night extra special was met with a response of overwhelming kindness and will go down in their personal history books for reasons beyond South Africa’s sensational win.

After a last-minute plea to their followers and supporters was made, to make the Boks night a treat for their children, people rose to the occasion in incredible ways.

St. Martin’s explained that children hadn’t been able to watch any of the matches. However, in anticipation of the final against New Zealand, the home was determined to give the little ones their chance to enjoy the match along with so many others in our country.

And, their community certainly came to the party!

In an update, St Martin’s shared that their Boks night was a roaring success.

“We were absolutely blown away by the kindness of South Africans who spoilt our kids more than we could’ve imagined,” the home shared.

They added that people pulled out all the stops to make the evening special, including dropping off treats both leading up to Saturday and on the day, making donations so that goodies could be bought, organising wors, pizzas, snacks and cool drinks and even supporter shirts.

The children stayed up past their bedtime to watch history unfold, followed by an evening of dancing and song that became a great story to tell at school on Monday.

After thanking everyone who made the evening possible, St Martin’s took to thank the South Africans of the hour (the Springboks) sharing that our national team has given South Africa the opportunity for communities to unite and show each other love, kindness and generosity—the biggest wins of all.
