Moira Jengels is set to become the new isiXhosa teacher at Sun Valley Primary School in Cape Town, inspiring since she started out cleaning and cooking.

The Sun Valley Primary School shared some happy news last week. One of their staff members has spent the last decade working to fulfil a dream.

Moira Jengels was born and raised on a farm by her Xhosa mother and coloured father. When she was a teenager, the family moved to Ocean View in the Western Cape and she started her high school career. She matriculated in 1994 and two years later, started her family with her husband.

When it came time for her four beautiful children to head to school, she knew she would have to start working to pay for their school fees. According to the Sun Valley Primary announcement, Moira didn’t want to live off of grants which is what inspired her to look for a proper job.

She approached the primary school for a job and started off small. In the mornings she worked in the Library, she cleaned during the lunch breaks and in the afternoons, she made food for the schools home base.

She impressed everyone with her work ethic and in 2007, was made the manager of all the above-mentioned services. Over the last decade, Moira has been the reason so many went home with smiles on their faces. She was someone everyone could turn to. She was offered a job in the school’s finance department in 2017.

This bump allowed her to start her studies through UNISA. With a passion for her mother-tongue, Moira will qualify for her BEd degree in education and was offered a full-time teaching job at the school.

Starting in the new year, Moira will be teaching grade 4 to 7 isiXhosa. She has been working her entire life for this moment and it only gets sweeter. When she isn’t teaching the young minds of South Africa one of our official languages, she will be working with a fellow teacher to write isiXhosa iBooks. The books will be distributed to learners across South Africa.

She may have started small but she will be making a big impact on the youth of South Africa. She is an inspiration!

Well done Moira. I am mighty proud of you. You persevere should be an example to many others. For humble beginnings to where you are today, is truly remarkable.” – Zaffie Oppelt

Moira, you are an inspiration to so many, very thankful that you have played a part in my children’s lives! You are a beautiful woman with an even more beautiful heart! All I can say is WOW well done and all the very best for the future! God bless you abundantly!” – Chris Donn

I find great happiness in knowing that someone from our community has been able to achieve something so wonderful. Our children will definitely benefit from her outstanding example. These are the kind of role models our kids need.” – Farzaana Fisher
