Randpark Ridge community contributed towards 80 warm blankets for the Thandanani House of Refuge by knitting squares and dropping them at the local mall.
Johannesburg, South Africa (05 August 2020) – Residents in Randpark Ridge, Johannesburg spent their free time knitting squares for charity.
Knitting squares is a common practice to help make blankets for those in need. The knitted squares are then linked into full-size blankets, making a stunning collage of different colours and techniques. Creating blankets out of 2400 knitted squares was a Randridge Mall team effort on the behalf of shoppers, staff and tenants. The goal was to make up blankets for the Thandanani House of Refuge based in Roodeport, Johannesburg.
Once all the multi-coloured squares that had been knitted, they were stitched together to form bright and warm blankets, that were dry cleaned and sanitised.
Randridge Mall delivered the 80 blankets to the children’s refuge last weekend. The refuge cares for abandoned, abused, orphaned and neglected children. These blankets are a show of love from the community.
Caretaker Claudia Masewawtla said that the little ones in their care needed extra warmth during these chilly winter months and thanked all who were involved on behalf of the children.
“We would like to thank both the staff that knitted the squares and the community members who transformed them into warm, cuddly blankets for helping us to reach out to these children. We know that Madiba loved children and, through this project, we have proved that, if we work together, we can reach out to those who need us most.” – Siphelele Sokhela, Randridge Mall Marketing Manager
