In a world where life is already so tough, we should always be kind, but that wasn’t the case for one person who boasted about not tipping their waiter – thankfully, the community stepped in to correct the situation.
Johannesburg, South Africa (15 February 2021) – Residents of Johannesburg were left scratching their heads last week when a local restaurant review ended in very disappointing behaviour towards a waiter.
The reviewer in question had seen an advert for an affordable meal and went to the restaurant. They were greeted by a happy and diligent Kelvin. The meal and all services were praised, and the reviewer even planned to tip well.
That is until they implemented an unfair personal policy. The reviewer explained that they wait to see how long it takes a waiter to bring the bill once the table has been cleared. For every minute they wait, they deduct R1.00. Note the reviewer later explained that they didn’t actually ask for the bill, which is what caused so much upset on the thread that followed.
By the end, the waiter Kelvin lost a total of R25 from his tip. He lost it without even understanding why. A very unfair personal policy indeed!
Thankfully, Relebohile Penn was outraged enough she decided to launch a crowdfund on Go Get Funding to get Kelvin the tip he deserved. She shared the news about the crowdfund and at the time of writing, it has raised over R4,400. Initially, her goal was to raise R1,000, but the community has gone above and beyond, much as Kelvin did.

This is a friendly reminder to be kind to your waiter and all the other staff at restaurants. They have struggled so much during this time. If you have any issues, speak to the manager, work together to sort out the problem and always, always lead with kindness!
