48 days after the accident took place, little Lebo was finally released from rehab. The medical staff all agree that his recovery is nothing short of amazing.
On the night of Wednesday 24th October, there was a horrific accident outside Dainfern Square, on William Nicol Drive in Johannesburg.
A woman (name undisclosed) was walking with two young children, a seven year-old girl called Thandolwethu and a five-year old boy called Lebo who were both family friends. They had all been to the shops to select a birthday gift for Thandolwethu who was turning 7 at the end of the month and were heading home, on foot, down William Nicol. They dashed across the road in a dark area beyond Dainfern Square and were hit by a taxi. The woman and Thandolwethu were killed instantly and little Lebo survived but received serious leg and head injuries.
An off-duty paramedic who witnessed the entire scenario immediately called the helicopter to the scene and airlifted Lebo to a private hospital where he was admitted to ICU.
Thandolwethu’s father, who had raised her since she was a baby (as he and his wife were estranged) was walking along William Nicol from his work to meet them all – completely unaware that the accident that had taken place – only to arrive at the scene and witness the aftermath of the accident.
Susan Harwood, a Dainfern resident and member of Future City Fourways heard about the accident and immediately contacted whoever she could to try raise some money to help both Lebo and the family of the deceased.
“One can barely imagine the trauma he went through witnessing this gruesomely sad scenario, and then to see his daughter and little Lebo in such a terrible state. It must have been so incredibly heartbreaking.” – Susan Harwood from Future City Fourways.
After almost 2 weeks of being in ICU, on the 6th of November, Lebo woke up! He sat up asked for some juice and asked for his parents who were waiting by his bedside. He was then transferred to a rehab hospital, gifted by the Junction Church on William Nicol, to assist him wit his recovery.
On the 11th of December, 48 days after the accident took place, Lebo was finally released from rehab and the medical staff all agree that his recovery is nothing short of amazing. The ‘miracle child’ is learning to walk again and from then on, will require physio to enable him to walk properly.
He faces many challenges going forward with various types of injuries, but manages to do it all with a smile. Lebo is ready to take on the world and be the best that he can be!
Together as a community and with the Angel Network, Susan’s crowdfund managed to raise just over R20 000!
“The money will definitely assist his family with medical bills and ease the plight of the father of the deceased child. A very big thank you to all those involved for your time and compassion. Onwards and upwards little Lebo!”
All the money for the families were deposited into the Junction Church Bank Account and will be administered by their finance team. You may continue to donate into Junction Church bank account if you wish to assist further.
