For over a decade, she has carried her daughter’s message with a cause. Now she needs urgent care.

South Africa (04 September 2025) – June Steenkamp is a strong and formidable woman. Through her battles, she has carried a message of hope and protection for women in an unrelenting fight against gender-based violence. A cause close to the Steenkamp family’s hearts.

Their lives have been an uphill battle since they lost their beloved Reeva, who was murdered by her boyfriend, Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

Tragedy struck even further for June almost two years ago, with the passing of her husband and Reeva’s father, Barry. He died in his sleep, after surviving two strokes.

Despite tremendous hardships over what has now been more than a decade since she lost her daughter, June has fought to create awareness and change around gender-based violence in South Africa.

She has championed the Reeva Steenkamp Foundation since November 2015, raising awareness around the horrific statistics of violence and abuse against women and children not only in South Africa, but around the world.

She has used her voice to educate and speak against abuse of women and children, as Reeva had done before her untimely death.

Now, June is the one who needs help.

The foundation took to social media on Wednesday to share the unfortunate news that June has suffered a stroke and is currently under care at a government hospital.

“She is facing a long road to recovery, and in need of considerable rehabilitation,” the foundation shared.

Rehab after a stroke usually involves an umbrella approach that includes physical, occupational, and speech therapy to help people get back their movement, independence, and communication skills. It’s a crucial step towards rebuilding life after a stroke, which often leaves massive ripple effects.

Reeva’s support circle are working to get her the necessary care and treatment needed for her rehabilitation, calling on donations from those who are able to assist.

“All payments will be approved by two independent attorneys and will be audited. Should the fund not be exhausted post rehabilitation, it will be donated to the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation to continue its mission of fighting the scourge of gender based violence,” the foundation adds.

If you are in a position to help, see this post for more details on how to contribute towards the assistance that June needs.
