Community kindness in leaps and bounds… this is the story we all need right now.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 October 2021) – Community Facebook groups can bring us loads of laughter, give us spaces to rant, irritate the hell out of us and sometimes, on rare occasions, give us the stories that restore our hope in humanity.

And a post from “I Love Fourways” is giving us all the feels!

Kari Almer put a simple question up on the group, hoping for advice… what she got was a gift for us all.

“My best friend is on a seriously tight budget, and she had to explain to her 6-year-old daughter why they would not be having Christmas this year. I am really shattered and would love to be able to give them a Christmas to remember as it’s been a hard year (for everyone). Please spam me with info on where I can go to stretch my bucks to get her the most.”

From Christmas trees to hand-made gifts, 1000-piece puzzles, pony rides, manicures, toys, bicycles, money, vouchers, brand new science experiment kits and even a festive lunch… the Fourways community are rallying together to help the mom give her kids the festive season they deserve.

“It is my birthday on Christmas Day; I would be the happiest to be able to give her little one a gift. Please inbox me what she likes/toys/dress size/Colours etc. and if she needs school books/stationary for the coming year.” – Tasneem Nagdee

“Kari, I have lots of Lego sets that I purchased for my son whilst on my travel abroad. All in good condition. He has outgrown them and would be happy to part with them. No original boxes, though. Let me know.” – Sabrina Manikkam

“I absolutely love this post and the responses from the community. I have 7 and 9-year-old daughters who LOVE “pop-its”. These pop-its (for those who don’t know) are ridiculous in that there is zero function other than to just provide happiness. Please PM me your delivery address & tel number, and I’ll be happy to send an order to you for her to open on Christmas Day from Erin & Mia (pop-it queens).
It’s frivolous, but what little girl doesn’t love frivolous.” – Rene Theron

“Hi Kari, please send me a, DM and we can discuss organizing a great Christmas lunch for them.” – Wendy Bowyer van Blerk

The post has since gone viral and inspired everyone that is seeing it.

“COVID has taken so much from all of us in the last two years; we cannot allow let it take another Christmas from anyone. If anything, this pandemic is a reminder that we need to be there for each other. This is how we rebuild and make the world better. Together.”

This is a story we all need right now. A reminder that we need to be there for each other. The last two years have been tough on us all. Perhaps this is how we get through this, this love and kindness.

So, it seems that this mom and her daughter are all set for Christmas this year, why not look in your own community groups to lend a helping hand to someone in need this festive season – and we know it’s earlier than usual, but we think we could all use a little more festive right now.
