When a freak accident left Chantal Jacobsen with life-altering burns, her community didn’t hesitate – they came together with love, determination, and generosity, raising over R121,000 in just a few days to help her heal.

Western Cape, South Africa (02 January 2025) – When tragedy strikes, it’s remarkable to see how people can come together to create something beautiful. Chantal Jacobsen, affectionately known as Chanty, is a self-employed makeup artist who recently experienced a devastating accident.

On Friday, 6th December, a freak incident in her kitchen changed her life. While making tea on her gas stove, her jumper caught alight, leaving her with 20% body burns on her abdomen, chest, neck, ear, and jaw.

The injuries are severe, with some burns requiring surgery and a recovery process that promises to be slow and challenging. Without medical aid, Chanty was moved to Tygerberg Hospital, where she’s receiving care. However, her loved ones and community recognised the need to do more – to give Chanty the best chance at recovery, access to specialised care, and relief from the financial stress that comes with mounting medical expenses.

This is where the magic happened. A crowdfunding campaign was launched with an initial target of R100,000 to cover her medical costs, daily expenses, and monthly bills. Within days, the target was smashed! The incredible support poured in from friends, family, and even strangers who were moved by Chanty’s story. Donations have now reached an astounding R121,210, prompting organisers to increase the goal to R200,000 to help with additional costs, including a potential move to private healthcare.

This outpouring of love and generosity speaks volumes about the strength of a united community. Chanty’s loved ones shared, “We are desperate to get her better medical treatment and into an environment where she can get the appropriate care for burn wounds. Every contribution is a lifeline for her to concentrate on getting better and not stress about finances.”

So why is this a good thing? Because it shows that in the face of adversity, there’s always hope. Chanty’s story is a reminder of the extraordinary kindness people are capable of, how a group of individuals can rally behind someone in need and create a wave of support that changes lives.

The journey isn’t over yet, and Chanty’s path to healing will take time. But thanks to the incredible spirit of giving, she’s one step closer to getting the care she deserves.

It’s proof that when we come together, we can make the impossible possible.

To everyone who has contributed or shared her story, thank you for being part of this incredible movement of kindness.

Chanty, we’re all rooting for you – your community is behind you every step of the way!
