Both winners, David Gatebe & Charne Bosman, say they will be back next year to defend their titles.

South African runners dominated the 2016 Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

The men’s race was won by David Gatebe in a new record time, followed by compatriots Ludwick Mambolo and Bongmusa Mthembu.

The ladies race was won by South African Charne Bosman.

Gatebe crossed the finish line in record breaking fashion as the jubilant crowed cheered him over the finish line. The incredible athlete finished in five hours, 18 minutes & 19 seconds, breaking the existing record.

Gatebe who pocketed R900,00, says he knew he was going to win.

“As I touched the 10 kilometres to go, I could smell the Durban ocean, then I knew I was going to win.”

It was also a major win for Bosman in the ladies’ race. The top female athlete crossed the finish line with a time of six hours, 26 minutes and 26 seconds.

She says it was hard to win.

“I just tried to stick to my race plan. It’s such a dream come true. I was scared of going out too hard, and that’s why I was focused on my plan.”

Both winners say they will be back next year to defend their titles.
