“Since the government are not able to do much to help us, we have to help ourselves. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness.”
Greenside, South Africa (27 February 2023) – A group of concerned Joburg residents spent Sunday fixing potholes in Greenside and Emmarentia.
The trio identified seven large potholes in the area and worked together to make the roads safer for their neighbours.
“Myself and another concerned resident of Emmarentia and Greenside spotted seven large potholes that are very dangerous at night and when it rains. We spent our Sunday doing a little bit for our community,” one of the concerned residents wrote.
Photos and videos of the good samaritans have been shared on various social media groups applauding the “pothole patrol” for their kindness.
“This is why I love South Africans. We just get on with it.”
“Our very own pothole patrol!!!! This is the best thing I have seen all day. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
“We are stronger together! We can make a difference. If we all play our part, then we will win.”

Potholes have become a severe problem in South Africa, causing extensive car damage. My Broadband recently reported that the country’s roads now have an estimated 25 million potholes — around seven million more than the estimated households in the country. This shocking information comes directly from the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral).
Even though the government cannot keep up with fixing our road infrastructure, kind citizens are taking to the streets to do it themselves, once again proving that the people of South Africa make this country so incredible.
