Josephine, an awesome South African takes common litter and turns it into the most incredible hats!
Josephine sports the cutest hat which she has dressed up with a matching scarf. “Shoprite Checkers bags” she says proudly. “I make them myself. I also have ones from Pick and Pay and Spar.”
She has been crocheting and knitting since she was 15 years old. Josephine’s mother was working for a family and she would help her mother look after the children. The lady of the house used to crochet and knit and sometimes Josephine would watch her spellbound!
One day she picked up some wool and asked the woman if she could have a hook so that she could also try. The woman was amazed when Josephine picked it up so quickly. “You are a smart one!” she told her.
“Ever since then I have been crocheting and knitting. I even knitted 60 blankets for Mandela Day a couple of years ago. I have also taught my daughter to crochet and knit.”
“I also love sewing but can only sew by hand. I have a machine but I don’t know how to use it properly as I was never taught. The machine is fine and it works, but I don’t know how to thread it properly or how to put the spool in. So now I sew by hand.”
Josephine lives in a small house in Cosmo City, Johannesburg. Josephine has a sewing machine but does not know how to use it. She is hoping there is someone out there willing to sit down with her and her machine and teach her how to use it?
