Because little surprises can sometimes make the biggest difference! Kind people around South Africa are leaving crochet surprises all over the country to make people’s days that much better.
South Africa (11 June, 2023)—There’s nothing quite like finding a surprise in an unsuspecting place. Like money you left and forgot about in an old jacket, or an extra-kind note on your takeaway order. Little surprises come in all shapes and forms, and sometimes they’re crocheted.
The Random Acts of Crochet Kindness Movement sees crochet gurus in different parts of South Africa use their skills to spread good energy, one hook at a time.
Their goal is as sweet as it is simple: crochet something, leave a note of encouragement and hide it somewhere in public where a stranger will find it.
Sometimes the tiny treasures find people having the worst days. They sneak up next to coffee cups, sit on benches, or hide in elevators evoking a smile from a stranger who may have thought they wouldn’t have much to grin about that day.
Although the movement has its mark all over the world, South Africans can be on the lookout for a creative surprise or two, or help crochet the path to more kindness by joining the groups.

A new group, RAOCK Cape Town was created earlier this year in an effort to uplift the city, created by Sharon Viljoen.
Using creativity to make someone else’s day a little more wholesome? Any random act of kindness? We’re always rooting for these little victories!
