Funda Nenja recently had a dog jersey day, handing out some much-needed warmth as well as dog food to the dogs of the Mpophomeni community.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (15 June 2020) – Funda Nenja runs in the township of Mpophomeni, near Howick, in the KZN Midlands of South Africa. Before the lockdown, on average, 100 children and their dogs attended weekly dog training sessions which happened on Friday afternoons at Zamethule Primary School in the township.
These lessons not only taught the dogs some skills, but it also helped the children bond with their pets and formed a deeper connection. These classes help educate children in animal welfare and encourage them to show their families how to treat animals.
Classes were taught by volunteer instructors, and some of the instructors are previous pupils who have gone through the training programme themselves.
All dogs on the programme are given a collar and a lead and are dewormed. The children are given training treats during classes to help with training and sent home with a small bag to continue training in a familiar environment. We covered the ins and outs of the organisation previously, which you can read here.
Since the lockdown, the organisation has been working to provide meals for the dogs and the children. Their most recent drive was to provide warm dog jerseys as there has been a major cold spell in South Africa.
“Yesterday was a chilly day in Mpophomeni so we gave all the dogs attending Funda Nenja a warm dog jacket or jersey to ward off the winter cold.
Some dogs were delighted to sport their new attire while others needed a little more time to get used to things, but at least we know that they all felt a whole lot warmer.”
