drain

Dogtown SA rescued a mom and her pup from a storm drain; the pair were riddled with fleas, ticks and worms, they refused to give up and save them all.

Pretoria, South Africa – Dogtown is a sanctuary for hundreds of dogs. The organisation take in dogs who have lost their families or have been rescued from horrific situations. The dedicated team of Dogtown, work hard to save more lives every single day.

One of their more recent rescues had us all choked up. The team were notified that a heavily pregnant dog was living in a stormwater drain a few kilometres from their premises. When they arrived, they saw that the dog had been pregnant but had, in fact, already had her puppies.

They sat nearby to build trust, and after an hour of coaxing her with food, they managed to get her into a cage. They then attempted to rescue the puppies from the drain. The terrified puppies moved further into the drain away from the humans.

The team only managed to rescue one of the puppies. They quickly rushed the mom and her puppy to the vet. After both were taken care of, the team returned to the drain to try rescue more puppies.

It is unclear if there were more than two, but in the end, the team were only able to save one other puppy from the drain. They left feeling devastated, but thankful to have saved three lives.

They are hoping the story will move people to help them support and care for the dog and her puppies, who have now been named Montana, Jill and Arizona. You can find out how to get involved in their lives here.
